Raga Yaman

When you start learning Hindustani Classical Music, it's Raga Yaman which most of us learn first. It's a beautiful and melodious raga. It's considered equivalent to Raga Kalyani in Karnatic Music.

Yaman Raga is a Janya Rag of Kalyan Thaat. It is a Shadav-Sampoorna Raga which omits Pa(Pancham) in Aroh and includes Pa in Avroh.  It's usually rendered in the first quarter of night.

AarohaNi Re Ga Ma Dha Ni Sa
AvrohaSa Ni Dha Pa Ma Ga Re Sa
PakadNi Re Ga Ma Pa Ma Ga Re Sa
VaadiGa
SamvaadiNi

I include a very popular and simple bandish in Raga Yaman, which almost every student learns while learning this raga

Eri Aali Piya Bin - Sanjeev Abhyankar

I have listened to some movie songs also in the same raga. There is one beautiful melody by Lata Mangeshkar in this raga from the movie Anpadh(1962). You can listen to this song  here.

Anu Malik, has composed another song in the same raga in the movie Refugee(2000). It's a beautiful song sung by Alka Yagnik. See the video Here.

Another beautiful melody is Woh Jab Yaad aaye from the movie Parasmani(1963).

There are a few songs in my mother tongue malayalam also. I will list them down for you and give the links also so that you can enjoy the beauty of the raga in them also.

My life with music

I have been learning music from the age of 6. I remember that my first teacher was a young lady who used to visit my home on weekends to teach me singing. I started off with Karnatic music which is more popular in South India. Till the age of 15 I didn't have any contact with Hindustani Music. But being a participant in some national level cultural programmes I got opportunity to listen to another kind of music which I didn't know to exist till then. It captivated my heart. But South Indians didn't have much idea about Hindustani Music which majority of India enjoys. I had this wish to learn Hindustani Music but there were no known teachers at that time in my place who teaches Hindustani Music.

After my 10th std, my mother found out a teacher, who is actually a Maharashtrian settled in Kerala, who gives lessons in Hindustani Classical Music. I was taken to him and I started learning from him. As my life went on, my teachers changed, but my interest in the most beautiful type of music I ever known, didn't end.
I am still learning even in my early thirties but till now I couldn't become a performer. I don't blame anything else, but me for this. Indian Classical Music is not so easy to master. But I consider myself to be lucky to have known the beauty of the most precious art form our country has gifted to the world.

So in my personal blog, I want to share my thoughts and ideas and some music which I enjoy with like-minded people.

I will be posting articles based on my learning and limited knowledge and would love to hear from people who knows more. You can comment on my posts if you liked my post, if you find something missing or something not right with my post or anything which you thought about my post.
Awaiting to meet more people who share my interest.

Love,
Nisha
